I heard a few Russians spell the word симпатичный as симпатиШный. Which spelling is correct?

Hello!

Yes, it is true, but the correct spelling is "симпатичный". Another variant of the word is "симпотный" [simpOtniy] with stressed o. "Симпотный" is a slangy word which is often used by young Russians. Partly because of the word "симпотный" some Russian make a spelling mistake writing "симпотичный" :)

симпатиШный sounds more funny in Russian, but it is not correct grammatically and inappropriate in formal situation.

Правильно конечно будет симпатичный, в моем детстве был мультфильм для детей, "Малыш и Карлсан", в этом мультфильме Карлсан говорил о страшном но очень симпатиШном привидении, все дети любили этот мультфильм и вот мы выросли, а любовь к Карлсану из этого мультфильма осталось, по этому иногда мы используем это слово, это очень мило

Симпатичный - is correct
Симпотный - this is way of the youth's pronouncing
симпатишный - little children are speaking such because they cannot pronounce "ч"instead of "ш" yet .And the adults simply tease them speaking the same.
Sorry for my English. I wrote with the help of google translater.
